A Tale of Two Schools
After working with the Rockford Public School District on updates to six elementary schools, CannonDesign was selected to design two new elementary schools in accordance with the district’s facilities master plan. At approximately 86,000 sf each, these two new schools will collectively replace five other existing elementary schools in an effort to upgrade facilities and reduce the district’s footprint.
To ensure students and staff had a part in the development process, CannonDesign held visioning sessions to discover opportunities and challenges. It was important to make sure the schools would reflect the civic pride in Rockford’s history, resilience, resurgence and entrepreneurship. Using a village design concept, the design of the new schools is centered on creating hubs for connection throughout the building to enhance the sense of community. An open, light-filled central commons is surrounded by grade-level learning communities, consisting of learning studios and shared collaboration areas. The exterior of the buildings will feature a variety of materials, colors and patterns, inviting students and community members alike.
The schools showcase a new prototype that collaboratively engages all students in a world class education, creating an inspirational place that maximizes student experience to best prepare them for the future.
