CannonDesign and Montgomery Sisam Architects, as part of the EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare team, have been selected to design the West Park Healthcare Centre Development Project located in Toronto. The vision for the project is to create an integrated campus of care fueled by education and research and anchored by specialized rehabilitation and complex continuing care services that extend into the community. Central to this vision will be the creation of a new 730,000 sf hospital with stunning and therapeutic views to nature along with a new Central Plaza, with ties to the existing long-term care building, a residential community to the east and the Humber River valley to the west.

“West Park’s overarching goal is to improve patient outcomes,” said Farah Rahman, principal at CannonDesign. “And of course, all of this will be done in a visionary environment we’re designing to directly support health, wellness and rehabilitation, and help patients get their lives back.”

Located in a park-like corner of Toronto’s cityscape, the development will embrace its natural surroundings and create an urban oasis delivering a healthcare experience like no other in the region.

“The new development is very much inspired by the therapeutic benefits of nature and the role it plays in the healing process,” said Ed Applebaum, principal at Montgomery Sisam Architects. “Every room will have captivating views, and patients will have access to walking pathways and outdoor therapy areas that will extend rehabilitation outdoors. This will be a very active and nurturing healthcare campus.”

The project is being designed and delivered as a public-private partnership (P3). Valued at $1.2 billion CAD, the scope of the PPPP includes the cost to design, build, finance and maintain the hospital. Ellis Don, one of the leading PPP deliverers in the world, is the developer, constructor, financer and facilities manager for the project. The project is planned for completion in 2023.
