Creating the Platform for Campus Growth
To achieve enduring academic excellence, the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) initiated “UB 2020” with the intention of increasing enrollment by 40%, or 10,000 student, by 2020. As one of the first steps in support of this initiative, the university commissioned Grenier Hall – a 600 bed facility that is the first residential hall built on campus in three decades and completes the 1970 master plan for the Ellicott Complex adjacent to Lake Lasalle.
The LEED Gold project offers students 21st century residential living on campus integrating the principles of sustainability, living-learning communities, and universal design. Large gathering and academic spaces, a café and casual study spaces on the ground floor form a true student hub. At upper levels, benches built in to the building’s cantilevered floors provide “front porch” spaces on every floor, activating hallway space and encouraging student interaction with spectacular water views.
We especially appreciate the engagement and enhancement of the public realm.
