The Building Design + Construction piece highlights how new facilities are working to respond to the nationwide mental health crisis.

With more federal and state funding going towards mental health prevention and care, investments are being made into new facilities that better accommodate various treatment options and allow for flexibility when it comes to differing patient populations, stay lengths and more.

The piece highlights two of our recent projects in California that use a recovery village treatment model:

  • A five-building campus in San Mateo, Calif., for the Cordilleras Health System. This is the state’s first net-zero mental health campus, and four of its buildings are dedicated to mental rehabilitation.
  • And the Los Angeles County + USC Restorative Care Village, whose first phase opened in the summer of 2021. It includes onsite housing, psychiatric medical support, job training and other related services.
Restorative Care Village 2
The LAC+USC Restorative Care Village consists of a four-story Recuperative Care Center that provides stable housing for those recently discharged from the hospital, as well as four Residential Treatment Program buildings that act as a short-term alternative to hospitalization for mental health and other social service needs.

The piece also highlights our work with Sheppard Pratt on its Baltimore/Washington Campus, which opened in August 2021. The project was showcased at the international Design for Mental Health conference in England, where our Tim Rommel and Sheppard Pratt CEO Dr. Harsh Trivedi spoke on how the nature-inspired hospital directly impacts the healing process.
