CannonDesign Teams with Corgan to Reimagine Burbank Airport as “The Icon”

We are proud to share that our design team has collaborated with Corgan on three possible concepts for the new passenger replacement terminal at Hollywood Burbank Airport. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority (BGPAA) has officially selected the dynamic “Icon” concept as the direction for the new terminal and we will continue our partnership throughout its development.
The Corgan and CannonDesign team was selected for Elevate BUR, a project that will bring a safer 355,000-sf, 14-gate replacement terminal to Hollywood Burbank Airport that meets the latest seismic codes and is farther away from the current runways. The terminal will provide leading-edge traveler experiences with greater access to amenities.

In early March, the team presented the three different concepts to the airport authority. The selected Icon concept is inspired by the glitz and glamor of Hollywood. It offers an elegant swooping roof canopy that gradually morphs into the facade of the airport’s parking structure. The design is intended to be reminiscent of a silver screen in a public plaza - a recognition of the film industry’s roots in Burbank.

“The Commission looked at what would be a ‘statement of arrival,''explained Emily Gabel-Luddy, Burbank Commissioner and President of BGPAA in a public statement. “The Icon’ affords that statement with its roofline and its deep shadow-giving cover over the plaza and arrival point, but also how it goes across the face of the parking structure.”
In making their final decision, the Commision weighed comments from a public survey, feedback from design charrettes held earlier in the design process, and guidelines of the development agreement the BGPAA has with the City of Burbank.
