We are thrilled to share that Engineering News-Record has published an in-depth profile of the University of Utah's new Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine.

Designed by our Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign in association with VCBO Architects, the building will serve as both a campus gateway and an epicenter for interdisciplinary learning. The building is intentionally designed to foster new levels of collaboration across students, educators, researchers and clinicians from all different fields.

Testimonials

  • This is a building that not only fulfills aspirations for the program, but also has a distinctive presence on the health sciences campus. The design attempts to engage the campus on multiple levels.

    Mehrdad Yazdani Yazdani Studio Director

Architecturally, the building creates an iconic focal point on a very tight site, revitalizing a previously nondescript entry to the campus, and capitalizes on the campus' magnificent setting against the Wasatch Mountains. Tucked between the university's existing hospital, nursing school and medical library, the building integrates sensitively and strategically into its site and surrounding context.

The building is designed to carefully maximize a unique site while also connecting to key medical education buildings nearby.

The building will house medical education spaces, including adaptive classrooms, a state-of-the-art advanced simulation center and a gross anatomy laboratory. The centerpiece of the design is an interior multistory forum where faculty and students will gather for large group presentations and informal dialogue.

The interior atrium is a defining feature of the design. The space allows plentiful natural light and allows for group events and small connections alike.

This is the third building our Yazdani Studio team has designed with the University of Utah. Previous projects include Lassonde Studios and the Impact and Prosperity Epicenter. The new school of medicine will open for the Fall 2026 semester.
